Love thyself as thy neighbor: Resilience by fulfilling God’s call

Presenter: Carolyn Klassen (Learn more about Carolyn at her website here.)

Serving in the church is inherently vulnerable—full of hurting and hurtful people, conflict, change, loss, and uncertainty. Leaders need to find their way through not only as professionals, but as profoundly human beings who are impacted by their ministry.  As pastors work to create healing and wholeness in those they lead, they themselves are called to work towards wholeness. The challenging work of serving God in a broken world is difficult for the soul. Understanding our natural need to be deeply connected with ourselves and others while in pursuit of this wholeness, this leadership day will:

  • Acknowledge and explore the vulnerability inherent in our world, particularly in ministry
  • Name and understand the impact of shame on all of life, particularly in ministry
  • Understand the powerful allure but ultimate ineffectiveness of strategies for coping with the vulnerability of stress, distress, and change: perfectionism, numbing, foreboding joy
  • Reviewing and practicing adaptive strategies of resilience: gratitude, self compassion, empathy/connection

The day will include material presented through stories, teaching and short videos, as well as a ample opportunities for discussion and practice in a style that fits for each person to participate.
